Protect Local Unions from Forced Mergers & Membership Transfers
Teamsters take great pride in their membership in strong, democratic local unions.
There are times when it is in the best interest of members and the union for locals to be merged or for members to move from one local to strengthen members’ bargaining leverage or improve union representation.
But the affected members and their local unions, not the International Union in Washington, DC, should be the judge.
Fred Zuckerman has proposed an amendment to prohibit local unions from being forcibly merged, and it would prohibit members from being forcibly transferred from one local to another without a vote of the affected members and the approval of the Local Union Executive Board of each affected local union.
